Inspirational Jobs – Community Coordinator Plan ZHEROES

3 days per week / 7 month contract

Salary: £22k pa pro-rata

Friday 19th August 2016

Plan Zheroes provides a practical solution to the parallel problem of growing food waste and the increasing numbers of people living in food poverty. We seek to make it easy for food businesses to give their surplus food to those who need it so that it will never go to waste.

Plan Zheroes started in 2010 as a group of volunteers committed to raising awareness of the issues. Today we are acknowledged experts in the field. We have given evidence at parliamentary commissions on food poverty and support food waste reduction initiatives of organisations such as WRAP, Considerate Hoteliers and the Sustainable Restaurant Association. In 2013 Plan Zheroes registered as a charity with the aim of building the organisation and extending our reach to areas outside London.

We are now at an exciting stage in our development. We see ourselves as a national network starting small. The potential to scale up comes from our ground breaking IT system which enables businesses with surplus food to connect with local charities feeding those in need and to safely and conveniently post food donations online.  The system also links charities with volunteers who can help them collect and transport the food. Our USP is that we can find solutions for small food businesses; accept perishable food; handle small quantities; and build lasting community networks.

The Role:

As part of our plans to scale up our network, we have received funding from Leicestershire Council’s Community Grants Programme for a seven month pilot project. The aim of the pilot is to further test our model and to build a self-sustaining, community network in Leicestershire for the distribution of good quality surplus food to people living in food poverty. This is an exciting opportunity to manage a project from the ground up, utilising Plan Zheroes experience of working in other areas of the UK.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Design and prepare pre and post pilot questionnaires for a select group of businesses, charities and volunteers participating in the project
  • Assist in the organisation and preparations for a project launch event
  • Using our business development process, recruit and register local businesses, charities and volunteers on Plan Zheroes’ platform for surplus food donations
  • Manage a small group of 4-5 volunteer ambassadors or ‘Zheroes’ which will help you to develop the network in specific areas of the county
  • Support users of the platform and help them overcome barriers to food donation/receipt and training them on using the platform, if necessary
  • Monitor food donations on a weekly basis and produce monthly management reports on the number of users and donations
  • Support the project through social media and other communications such as newsletters and blogs
  • Manage and maintain contact databases for use by Plan Zheroes staff and volunteers
  • Prepare a short report on the 6 month pilot using data and information generated by the platform, the questionnaires and case studies

The post holder will also undertake any other responsibilities which may arise from time to time. This post reports to Plan Zheroes’ Chief Executive and will be supported by the Platform and Community Manager.

Midday Friday 19 August 2016

At FareShare, we fight food poverty by tackling food waste. We operate in 20 regions in the UK, across more than 200 towns and cities, providing food to over 2,489 projects – our Community Food Members. Last year, we provided food for 18.3 million meals, helping to reach 211,656 people each week.

Watch our film to see how FareShare is helping to transform lives.

About the opportunity:

Each December FareShare works with one of our key food partners to hold a nationwide food drive. For this, we recruit an army of volunteers to give their time in store, encouraging members of the public to donate store-cupboard staples such as pasta, rice and tins. We use these to supplement the fresh, in-date surplus food we receive from the food industry throughout the year to ensure the charities we support receive a reliable supply of varied food.

We are looking for someone to assist with the organisation and smooth running of our Food Drive, from preparation, to implementation as well as post-event analysis You will support the Partnerships Coordinator in recruiting a nationwide team of enthusiastic volunteers by advertising for, engaging with and managing volunteers.

You will help to coordinate this national event; liaising with our charity and food partners, responding to queries, working with our Regional Centres and Communications team and helping with the recruitment platform, database management and administration.

We are looking for an innovative and enthusiastic candidate who enjoys the planning and implementation of events. We want someone who is confident sharing new ideas and can bring fresh perspective to the event. The successful candidate must enjoy a challenge and will show real dedication to both their role and FareShare’s mission. In return, we will work to ensure that you get great experience of working at a fast-paced charity on the frontline of charitable food redistribution.
